The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton Board of Directors approved two Critical Service grants under the boards refocused funding strategy model at its April 26, 2021 board meeting.
United Way funded programs must be local and fall within one of three priority areas: From Poverty to Possibility, helping people move out of or avoid the cycle of poverty; All That Kids Can Be, which will invest in youth so they can succeed in school while developing supportive relationships; and Healthy People, Strong Communities, creating a strong, inclusive community connecting people to supports for their well-being, from addiction and mental health supports to helping seniors live independently.
St. Vincent de Paul – Food Bank – $20,000
St. Vincent de Paul food bank assistance helps to prevent further hardship on clients living on a low income in poverty by assisting with rent or utility emergencies and food.
The food bank has seen an increase in requests for cleaning supplies and vitamins along with fresh items such as milk, eggs, and cheese. There has also been an increase in the number of seniors requesting nutritional supplement drinks, hygiene items and diabetic needs. St. Vincent will also fill the gap for those who need dental work done but cannot get assistance elsewhere.
Walpole Island First Nation – Warming Shelter – $30,000
The Warming Shelter located in the Walpole Island Anglican Church rectory has eight beds and has been at or near capacity since opened in mid- April. An estimated 20+ community members need Warming Shelter assistance each night.
Funds will allow the shelter to restore its bottom level to make room for a larger client base, including a space for women (which they currently do not have). Funds will also assist with the shelter supervisors’ costs to ensure safety and other shelter needs. The shelter provides a safe space to stay, provides referrals to community services, access to transitional housing, nutrition and water, showers, and laundry facilities.
“As the pandemic continues, we have had to determine how to best support our local community given the increase in need for services”, said Jason Killingsworth, United Way volunteer Board President. “The approval of these grants speaks to the incredible work being done across Sarnia-Lambton.”
